STORYTELLING

I am in love with our old stories and would love to share a story with you. So much of human experience is passed between our friends using story. I love fables, legends and fairy tales. These old stories are reflections about life. They fire up our creative juices and slip quietly into our subconscious. And they are fun! Stories make you think and sometimes come back to our memories at ‘just the right time’.

 I run workshops from time to time teaching the art of storytelling. Storytelling encourages us to be part of the bigger community – the global village. Through stories we can reflect and respond and find common ground.

I became a storyteller after someone in England came to a one woman show that I was in. I had originally trained in the theatre and was working in the north of England. A man came to my show and told me I was a storyteller! He invited me to a gathering of storytellers. I went and I was hooked. Stories and theatre are cousins but not the same. Everyone has stories; not everyone is a performer. 

Stories help us see our world from a different perspective. Here is one of my favourites: Flight from the Shadow by Chuang Tzu

There was a man who was so disturbed by the sight of his own shadow and so displeased with his own footsteps that he determined to get rid of both. The method he hit upon was to run away from them.

So he got up and ran. But every time he put his foot down there was another step, while his shadow kept up with him without the slightest difficulty.

He attributed his failure to the fact that he was not running fast enough. So he ran faster and faster, without stopping, until he finally dropped dead.

He failed to realize that if he merely stepped into the shade, his shadow would vanish, and if he sat down and stayed still, there would be no more footsteps.
